Here is a quick rundown that we hope you will find helpful...

If you have an EXISTING HOME......( home improvements )
1-items must be "placed in service" between Jan. 1, 2009 and Dec. 31, 2010
2-most items must be for your "principal residence". (geothermal heat pumps, solar water heaters, solar panels, and small wind energy systems, can be installed in second homes.)
3- for most items, $1500.00 is the maximum credit allowed for any one or combination of improvements. ( EXCEPT for geothermal heat pumps, solar water heaters, solar panels, fuel cells, and small wind energy systems which are not subject to this cap, and are in effect through 2016)
4-you must have a " Manufacturer Certification Statement" which is usually supplied at the time of purchase.
5-you should keep your receipts, and file an IRS form 5695 with your 2009 taxes.
Here's what qualifies....
Insulation... 30% of cost . ( $1500.00 max credit ) . Insulation must meet 2009 IECC & Amendments - and be used primarily to insulate (ie: insulated siding does not qualify) ( however, new insulation can be in adddition to existing insualtion . )
Windows, Doors, Skylights.... 30% of cost . ( $1500.00 max credit )
must have U factor <=.30 and SHGC <=.30 as printed on Mfgs Label
Storm Windows - 30% of cost ( $1500.00 max credit ) if in
combination with existing window has a U factor and
SHGC<=.30
Storm Doors… 30% of cost ( $1500.00 max credit ) if in
combination with existing wood door has a U factor and
SHGC of .30 or below
Roofing. ( metal and reflective asphalt ) 30% of cost ( max $1500.00 credit ) for all ENERGY STAR qualified metal and reflective asphalt shingles
Other qualifying items include many Energy Star rated Central A/C systems , Air Source Heat Pumps, Natural Gas, Propane, and Oil Furnaces, Gas, Propane and Oil Hot Water Boilers,Gas, Oil and Propane Hot Water Heaters, Bio-mass Stoves,Solar Energy Systems, Photovoltaic and Wind Systems ..

NEW HOMES.........If you are building a new home, you can qualify for the tax credit for geothermal heat pumps, photovoltaics, solar water heaters, small wind energy systems and fuel cells, but not the tax credits for windows, doors, insulation, roofs, HVAC, or non-solar water heaters.
